I wish ...

... it would be light outside at 5:30 a.m. into September instead of getting dark already in mid-August.

... the body didn't require sleep.

... my baby-sitting neighbor hadn't a.) grown up, and b.) moved away.

... I could eat a heath/chocolate scone from Adirondack in Nisswa every day.

... my sister and her family lived closer to us. (This wish may someday come true!)

... school supplies and school clothes and school lunches were free.

... there were 36 hours in a day. (Maybe I could catch up on sleep!)

How do you beat the heat?

I recently heard one good way to stay cool is to keep a cool wash cloth or ice on your head. Just like heat escapes through our heads in winter, so does cold in the summer.

That doesn't sound so appealing to me.

Here's an easy way to beat the heat, or at least put up a good fight, that seems to work for me: Right before bed I take a nice, cool shower. I put on my jammies and sprawl on my bed - on top of the covers - with a fan blowing right on me.

I usually sleep soundly through the night.

Fireworks

I'm a big fan of fireworks. Honest. I love leaning back on a blanket, gazing at the sky above me as bursts of color crackle above. My kids always ask, "Is this the grand finale? Is this the grand finale?"

Finally, the grand finale comes and firework after firework lights up the sky. Amazing.

Daylight

As I headed to bed at 9:50 p.m. last night, something just didn't seem right. Know what it was?

It was still light outside! And I mean light. I couldn't believe it. Makes it hard to remember those December days when it's dark at 4 p.m.

So remember to actually notice summer, because it'll be over before we know it. Don't just admire the flowers; smell them. And don't just run inside at night to avoid hungry mosquitoes. Look out the window at the summer sights. You can still see them quite clearly late at night.

Festive time

It's a festive time in the lakes area with the Fourth of July right around the corner. There are parades in Nisswa, Pequot Lakes and Brainerd. Fireworks in Crosslake, Pequot Lakes and Brainerd. Plain and simple, it's a fun time.

Our tradition is to hit the Brainerd parade with neighbors, then filter down by the baseball field, form a circle with our blankets and camping chairs, and eat and play til the fireworks start. It's a long time, but we have so much fun.
