What is it with these signs?

So this summer I have noticed more and more signs promoting businesses along the roadways.  These aren't one time or one weekend garage sale signs.  They are small signs, well, probably 2 feet by 2 feet or so, posted along roadways promoting landscapers, well installers, tree trimmers and numerous other businesses.

Taxes are done - but not yet in the mail

After paying a small fortune last year to have my taxes done, I decided to go the TurboTax route and do my own this year.  Yes, it was a little time consuming, but I figured I saved myself severla hundred dollars by plugging numbers into the software myself, rather than paying someone else $250 (or more) per hour to do it for me.  Every year I have to gather up all the W-2s, 1099s and whatever else and take one neat pile to the tax preparer - who no doubt uses software similar to what I did.

Dogs shedding in the winter

November means the coming of winter. Some people might say it's already here.  It has indeed turned colder, although not really winter-like, which to me means the temperature is 10 degrees or colder.

But this weather does require a jacket and gloves when you go outside.  So, my question is, why is my 7 year old black lab shedding?  He has a nice thick coat and there are now big clumps of it all over my house.  Does he know something the rest of us don't?  Does this mean it will be a mild winter and his coat is too thick?

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads

So what is it with labs that make them like to roll in very, very smelly things? My pup, well, he is 16 months old now so maybe technically he is no longer a pup, has this great longing to roll in dead, smelly fish. Labs have so much energy they do need to be off leash where they can burn off some of that energy. So we head off to a dead end road that sort of dead ends into a snowmobile/atv trail. Along one side are tall weeds and an area that I have named "Wood Tick City".

The bugs of the north woods

So sometimes when I am out walking my two labs everything goes right - not to hot or too cold, and a slight breeze to keep the darn bugs away - at least the flying kind. The ticks have slowed down. They're still around, but instead of pulling off 15 to 20 a day on the dogs, I find one or two a week. We can handle that. It's really interesting what the "experts" say about removing those ticks. You are supposed to get a pair of tweezers and be very, very careful so you get the head out. Well, let these people remove 20 or 30 ticks a day.

Dogs and toads don't mix

This morning the pup was feeling a bit under the weather.  We are never really sure what his problem is.  He does tend to pick up things and eat them - bugs, dead fish, bits of food, and, of course, grass.  He never did eat his breakfast, which is unusual for him as he gets up at 4 a.m. wanting to eat.  So it got me to thinking about the time the older and now wiser black lab ate a toad.

Living with labs. . . . .

So I am still trying to figure out what to put in this best selling book about living with two labradors. Owning two dogs can be quite an adventure or it can just be a lot of work. The older dog has been through three obedience classes and one agility training class. And now that I feel like I am "trained" I don't see much of a reason to take the younger dog to classes. It's not that I don't know what to do, but merely a matter of spending the time and making the dogs do that routine stuff like heel, sit, stay and down.

Walking the dogs, part three

Living with dogs is interesting. Just this morning one dog decided to roll on dead fish. That seems to give dogs great pleasure and of course the older and smellier the fish, the better they like it. And, naturally, they roll in something dead just a short time before their humans have to go to work.

20 Landscape Design Tips

1) Consider the use of skyline or background trees not only as a setting or frame for the house, but also to add depth to the landscape. This is the reason taller trees are most often used to the rear of the property and smaller ones to the front.

Ticks are falling from the sky

Spring is a great time in Minnesota.  We are finally free of the sub-zero temperatures, bitter cold winds, and days where we only get about 3 hours of actual daylight.  So as I was out walking the two labs today, listening to the birds and enjoying the sunshine on my face, I realized there is only one major pitfall to spring.
